Companies everywhere are pushing employees to use AI tools, and people are listening. AI use at work has doubled since 2023. But here’s the strange part: most companies—95%—say they aren’t actually getting much benefit from it.
Researchers found a likely reason. Instead of improving work, some employees use AI to quickly produce things that look polished but aren’t useful. This is called “work slop.” Work slop is AI-made content that seems tidy—a neat report, presentation, or summary—but lacks depth or accuracy. At first glance it looks fine, but when someone else reads it they find it confusing, incomplete, or wrong. That person then has to spend extra time fixing or redoing it. In short, the creator saves time, but the receiver pays the price.
Real examples: a worker said AI-generated content forced him to choose between rewriting it himself, asking the sender to redo it, or accepting bad work. A tech manager said it took hours to explain and clean up confusing AI-written emails. A retail director wasted time fact-checking, setting meetings, and redoing work from scratch. On average, employees spend almost two hours fixing each piece of work slop. For big companies, that adds up to millions of dollars lost every year.
The human cost is real. Work slop doesn’t just waste time—it hurts relationships. Fifty-three percent of employees feel annoyed when they get it. Forty-two percent see the sender as less trustworthy. Thirty-seven percent think the sender is less intelligent. One in three don’t want to work with that person again. Sloppy AI use makes co-workers respect each other less and weakens teamwork.
